3 Ways Couples Are Trimming Their Budgets

1. The Guest List
The first order of business, after slipping that sparkling rock on your ring finger, is to decide how large, or how small, you want your wedding to be.  Will it be an intimate affair for your closest family and friends, or the soiree of the season for 250?

Both the bride and groom may have different ideas about who to invite.  Many couples start their lists with their families first, then friends, and follow with acquaintances and work associates.  When making cuts, you should do this in reverse order, starting with those who aren’t  as close to you.  Remember, it is YOUR wedding and just because you two were invited to another couples’ wedding, does not mean have to attend yours.  Who do you want to be there to share in your special day?

If you are worried about hurting people’s feelings, explain that the guest list is restricted.  And kindly ask those who are invited not to gush about the details in mixed company of those not attending.

2. DIY Projects
Couples love to come up with clever projects to make their weddings unique.  You can be sure that no one else has the same favors or escort cards and it can save you hundreds of dollars.  Crafty brides probably have a dozen or so ideas in their heads of how to personalize their special day.

Browse for clever ideas in wedding magazines and wedding blogs.  Michael’s and AC Moore offer a bevy of wedding craft supplies right in the store.  DIY projects can be done for favors, escort cards, the guest book, invitations, save the dates, programs, centerpieces, decorations and more.

Be careful not to overload yourself on projects. Choose the one (or two) that you're really in love with and focus your resources (both time and money) into working on those.

3. Off-Season Savings
The most popular months for nuptials are May through October.  During the off-season months, wedding vendors and venues yearn for business.  This can give you the edge on negotiating prices and save you thousands on a ballroom or catering services.  Marrying around a holiday, such as Christmas, can help a couple save money on decorations. Many places of worship and banquet locations are likely already decorated for the season.

If you have your heart set on a June wedding, consider skipping the traditional Saturday ceremony.  Day-of vendors like caterers and DJs may have openings during the week and will be eager for your business.
